Artificial intelligence is moving out of the research lab and into everyday NHS care. For the people we supply, from hospital teams to care homes and GP practices, it is starting to change how quickly patients are seen and how clinicians spend their time.
Faster answers from X-rays
The NHS carries out more than seven million chest X-rays a year. An AI tool that helps spot signs of lung cancer on those images is already used in around half of NHS Trusts in England, and in June 2026 the Government committed £20 million to roll it out to every Trust by 2029. According to the announcement, the time taken to analyse complex cases has fallen from eight days to four. A further £8.1 million is funding pilots of six more AI and digital tools at 13 NHS sites, covering conditions such as heart failure and stroke. (AI Weekly, June 2026)
Helping patients find the right service
NHS England is adding an AI triage tool to the NHS App to point patients towards the right care. It is due to reach more than 200,000 patients over the next twelve months and every NHS App user by April 2028. Alongside it, AI tools that transcribe consultations and draft clinical summaries are being rolled out, starting with outpatient appointments. (Chartered Society of Physiotherapy, July 2026)
People still make the difference
The professional bodies welcome the investment but stress that it only works when staff have the training, time and equipment to use it well. The Chartered Society of Physiotherapy has launched digital and data training for its members for exactly that reason.
What it means for infection control
Faster diagnosis means more patients moving through clinics, scanning rooms and wards each day. Every one of those contacts still depends on the basics: clean hands, the right gloves and the right mask. As care speeds up, a reliable supply of certified PPE matters more, not less.
Finer Healthcare supplies Type IIR surgical masks, nitrile gloves, sanitiser and wipes to NHS Trusts, care homes and businesses across the UK. For trade pricing, email info@finerhealthcare.com.
